How to connect up to 8 monitors from one PC / Laptop computer?

Eight Display Monitors

Recently, Thee DocKtor was asked if it was possible to render eight extended HD displays by using two of the award-winning Targus DOCK520 driven by a single host. The client wanted to use a laptop to monitor eight security cameras each rendered on eight different display monitors.
Using a Windows 10 PC with supporting graphics adaptor, this application can be supported by connecting a DOCK520 into another DOCK520 connected to the host PC. It also works when connecting one DOCK520 into one port of the host PC and another DOCK520 into a different port of the host PC (i.e. two separate USB Type-C ports). See the example Windows Display Settings window below.

It was not possible to support this configuration in macOS or Chrome OS, and it was not attempted in Ubuntu. Theoretically, more monitors can be used with more Targus Universal Docking Stations, but Thee DocKtor ran out of display monitors to use in attempting more.

Power Your Productivity with the New Targus USB-C Universal DV4K Docking Station

Power Your Productivity with the New Targus USB-C Universal DV4K Docking Station
The Targus USB-C Universal DV4K Docking Station with Power (DOCK180-USZ) combines performance with power and the ability to plug in two ultra-high-def monitors via HDMI or DisplayPort.

Targus, the industry leader that introduced the first universal dual-video docking station, adds a new powered dock to its extensive lineup of docking stations — the USB-C Universal DV4K Docking Station (DOCK180-AP).

“Designed for enterprises with a fleet of USB Type-C laptops, the USB-C Universal DV4K Docking Station combines performance with power and the ability to plug in two ultra-high-def monitors,” says Andrew Corkill, Vice President of Product Marketing. “It’ll work with legacy USB-A computers as well, making it a truly universal docking station. You can charge laptops and save desk real estate thanks to its compact design.”

For organizations that equip their offices with newer USB-C host devices, the DOCK180 provides dual, extended displays with power up to 60W, transforming a laptop into a productive workspace. Unlike the competition, it’s an ideal universal docking station for offices and flexible workspaces because it offers compatibility with all laptop brands, major operating systems like Windows® and macOS™, and new and legacy USB-A computers (thanks to the included USB-C to USB-A adapter cable.

With the DOCK180, there’s no need to plug in accessories and peripherals each time you come and go from your workstation. That advanced efficiency saves time and frustration when moving from desk to conference room and back again. Likewise, a single connection links all of your peripherals to your laptop via the dock so that you can free up your desk space and keep the usual tangle of wires at bay.

Connect to more with the docking station’s ports:

  • Supports dual 4K Ultra HD monitor video via 2 DisplayPort (DP 1.2a) and 2 HDMI (HDMI 2.0) ports
  • Power Delivery 2.0 provides up to 60W charging
  • Thunderbolt™ 3 compatible
  • 1 USB-C device port (USB 3.0 data only)
  • 1 Gigabit Ethernet port
  • 4 USB 3.0 ports for the latest peripherals (1 fast device-charging port)
  • 1 3.5mm combo Audio In/Out for mics, speakers, and earphones
  • USB-C to USB-A cable
